Lighting Charlie Daniels

The 12 Foot Ceiling

The Charlie Daniels Band came to town and the promoter wanted a portion of the performance filmed for later PR purposes.

A film production company was contracted and I was hired as a freelance lighting director and gaffer.

I probably should have checked the venue prior to accepting the position. We were to shoot in a tavern with a rather large room and stage but the ceiling was only 12 feet tall. This was a major challenge. And it was exacerbated by the director of photography’s request that the background be kept as dark as possible.

The false ceiling was a salvation. I could remove tiles and use gaff clips to hang the lights but this meant I was limited to 1k lights as anything larger would be too heavy.

The limitation to 1k lighting resulted in the need for many, many lights. Many, many lights means miles of cable.

My oh my.

Then There Is Power

Walking to the rear of the tavern to check the availability of power, I found one of the oldest junction boxes I’ve ever dealt with.

Not only was it old but overloaded as well.

Again, my oh my.

I got on the phone with city power and arranged for a special tap into the power lines with a separate junction box.

Now, I have to admit to having a serious respect for electricity. I’ve had 120 volts running through my body before and it’s not a fun feeling.

But now I was tied directly into the city’s power grid and I don’t mind saying I was a bit nervous.

Lighting set up for this shoot took two days. We pulled it off without one electrocution.
